AMGF hosts Yoga Marathon at the Bryanston Market
AMGF not only educates girls on menstrual hygiene but also donates menstrual cups to ensure they stay in school and attain the education necessary to make their lives successful. Unlike sanitary pads and tampons, a single menstrual cup is safe and reusable for up to 10 years.
Founded by Quincy Molope in August 2021, A Million Girls Foundation (AMGF) is on a mission to keep one million girls in school over the next five years, ensuring they do not miss school during their period due to a lack of hygiene products.
The Yoga Marathon event took place at Bryanston Organic Market, on June 24. The purpose is to raise funds to provide girls with an AMGF menstrual cup kit, which includes a menstrual cup, steriliser cup, size-appropriate sports bra, underwear, and a yoga mat.
“More than 50% of girls are unable to manage their period adequately and lack basic hygiene and clothing necessities as they enter adolescence, but we aim to change that so that they can stay in school,” says Molope.
According to AMGF, most of the girls participating in the programme have experienced trauma and yoga is one method they can use to facilitate healing, holistic health, and self-love. The founder of Olerato Yoga, Lerato Malatjie, led the first session of the day. Olerato Yoga aims to redefine African wellness through yoga. Oratiloe Matla, Siphesihle Ndaba, Sibusiso Ngema, and Shandre Dalais-Levin led subsequent yoga sessions, each with a specific goal.
