Potholes, and cracked roads anger Buccleuch Residents

Buccleuch residents have been complaining to JRA about the lack of service delivery.

For months, Buccleuch residents have been complaining about potholes as well as cracked roads on Gibson and Buccleuch drives.

The neighborhood believes that service delivery has been poor, following six months of repeated complaints to the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) about potholes on Gibson Drive.

According to Gary Clarke, a member of the community, they are suffering from terrible road conditions on important highways since the JRA is not doing anything to solve the issue.

“This is affecting us as a community because it puts Buccleuch in a bad light as a poor third-class suburb. People think that this is a dump and it brings the property values down. There have been some close calls with cars trying to preserve their car tyres while avoiding these potholes. JRA expects the suburbs to fill their potholes at their expense so that they can save money,” said Clarke.

Buccleuch community leader, Lauren Nightingale, also stated that the Buccleuch Drive potholes have not been repaired since November last year. The JRA promised to patch the potholes, but they never showed up.

She went on to say that the potholes had been there for eight months and that they had tried to contact JRA numerous times, but the problem did not seem to be resolved.

According to Mosa Makhalima, JRA spokesperson, the JRA depot is fully aware of potholes at Gibson Drive West and Buccleuch Drive. There is a backlog in repairing potholes in the region and this area is on the list for repair, therefore they will revert once the depot has finalised the date for repairs.
