Six months and still waiting on Joburg Water to fix the road

Families of the Gallo Manor area are frustrated with the lack of service delivery from Joburg Water.

Residents in Gallo Manor Sandton are calling Joburg Water to come see and fix the state of their road after they left it without doing a proper reinstatement.

Fatime Jogee, a resident, said the initial query was logged on November 16 last year, and followed up in February, March, and April of this year, but still, nothing happened.

“As a community, we have been waiting for six months for the reinstatement to be done, and as a paying and law-abiding citizen, where do we turn now? Also, we now have to turn to the media to get Joburg Water’s attention.”

Jogee added that the whole community that drives past the road is frustrated as half of the road is not tarred, and it becomes difficult for them to drive there when it rains.

Another resident who logs in the inquiry from her side, Lesley King, explained that despite her numerous messages to Joburg Water, they still haven’t gotten any chance to come and fix the road.

“The road was left like this after the water leak was repaired. It took several months for the holes to be filled, but the road is still untarred. We call on Joburg Water to come to fix the situation.”

On June 1, the Sandton Chronicle contacted Joburg Water about reinstatement at Gallo Manor, ext. 2, at the top of Hampton Court and Hendon Lane, and asked them when they would be doing a reinstatement and why it had taken them this long to do it.

Nolwazi Dhlamini, the spokesperson of Joburg Water, said, JW does not do the tar reinstatements they are done by the entity’s reinstatement contractor, and this specific reinstatement is on their list, meaning it’s in their queue.

She added that we must note that prior to mid-last year, the Johannesburg Roads Agency was responsible for the reinstatement jobs. However, a decision was taken that Johannesburg Water would take over the responsibility of performing reinstatements on the tarmac, paved, concrete, and stone surfaces for excavations that the company is responsible for.

“These excavations are done during the repair of water and sanitation infrastructure. There are also grass surfaces that require minor reinstatement work that involves backfilling and compacting to normal ground level.”

Dhlamini concluded by saying that different works are scheduled according to capacity; some reinstatement jobs take longer to complete as Joburg Water is facing a huge backlog of reinstatements around the city, which we are working around the clock with both internal teams and service providers to complete.
