Outreach Pizza Day at Michael Mount Waldorf School

Michael Mount Waldorf School continues with its tradition of playing an important role in community building and giving back to the greater Waldorf community.

A group of Michael Mount Waldorf parents hosted their termly, festive pizza day for the school on May 5.

Pizza Fridays are an old Michael Mount tradition which initiates as a fundraising event for their outreach mandate.

The proceeds are used for various community outreach activities that the school conducts throughout the year, particularly to support their sister Waldorf schools.

Christina Seuffert, the marketing and communications personnel at the school, said, “Pizza days play a special role in our school and are a core feature of our community building, providing the parents with the opportunity to give back to our greater Waldorf community within South Africa.”

Seuffert highlighted that this term’s pizza day was unique in that it was accompanied by a day of outreach sharing, and they invited teachers from their sister schools, Inkanyezi (Alexandra, Johannesburg), Lesedi (Madietane, Limpopo), and Village (Irene, Centurion).

“The visiting teachers spent the morning immersed in the classrooms of their Michael Mount colleagues, sharing teaching resources, inspiration, and ideas.” This was followed by a social lunch and a workshop, which allowed everyone to connect further.

She adds that it was also great for their pizza-baking parents to connect with those who benefit from this longstanding fundraising initiative.

Kiki Sanne, a Class 12 parent and longstanding member of the Michael Mount community and Michael Mount Outreach group, said, “In times when the time for one another is scarce, a school has the potential to become a central meeting space where the social life of the community blossoms.”

It can be a place where the exchange of experiences, skills, knowledge, craft, language, and joy happens, all while weaving an interconnected social network.

Sanne points out that this was a day when their community of like-minded schools strengthened their idea of a supportive network of cooperation, starting with communication and ending with a heartfelt connection.

“We hold much gratitude and hope for the future of our greater community.”
