Bryanston Primary school project supports Kids Haven

The Grade 7 learners at Bryanston Primary School used their latest Stem project to support the Kids Haven organisation.

Bryanston Primary School’s Grade 7 class recently gave back to the community through its Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) project.

As part of the school project, the learners had to knit squares and sew them together to make blankets with the help of their parents.

According to the school’s Tania Roman, Stem educators showed the learners how wool is made, the history of knitting, and why knitting is still an important skill to learn.

“Their aim as a grade was to knit enough squares to make blankets for the less fortunate. Using this activity also allowed our Grade 7’s to still the mind as knitting focusses the mind completely on the task at hand.

Bryanston Primary’s Lance Roman hands the blanket donations over to Connie Biyela from Kids Haven.

“Knitting can be used to calm anxiety and serve as a type of mediation technique and this activity was thoroughly enjoyed by our Grade 7 group.”

At the end of the project, three beautifully knitted blankets were made and then donated to the Kids Haven non-profit organisation.

Leading the project was Grade 6 learners Lance Roman, who is currently the leader of the Grade 7 community outreach committee at Bryanston Primary.

As a registered Community Hours volunteer and leader of the school’s outreach programme, he assisted with handing over the blankets to Connie Biyela from Kids Haven.

“Our hope as a school is to knit more blankets in the future and to continue the art of knitting with our learners in order to donate to the less fortunate.”
