Local expert shares benefits of switching to solar amid rolling blackouts

As South African hits record-breaking consective rolling blackouts, can solar energy be the solution that households and businesses need? Local expert Vincent Maposa shares his insights.

As the community experiences record-breaking periods of load-shedding, many have questioned the sustainability of alternative energies such as solar.

But how accessible is it to make the conversion to solar? According to local solar energy expert Vincent Maposa, CEO of Bryanston-based business Wetility, it is easier than ever to make the switch.

Due to load-shedding and rising electricity prices, businesses and households are becoming more energy poor.

“Considering the current and expected prolonged crisis facing South Africa and the Southern African region, solar coupled with battery storage is likely the best solution.”

Maposa added converting to solar has become easier and more importantly, quicker, as more banks and companies offer solar financing, lease-to-own and subscription options to customers – removing the barrier to entry.

Major banks such as Nedbank and FNB have even gone as far as to partner with professional solar installers to make alternative energy more accessible.

“In addition, there is some standardization of products, including all-in-one inverter battery combinations and regulations, such as the elimination of the need to obtain licenses from Nersa for plants below 100MW.”

While solar may not take households and businesses completely off the grid, it will help reduce the cost of electricity. Residents and businesses can also enjoy an uninterrupted power supply if battery storage is used.

“Both at home and in business, uninterrupted power is essential for productivity. It is also great for the environment and reduces carbon emissions,” Mapose said.
