JRA promises to permanently fix Buccleuch low-bridge

CEO of Johannesburg Road Agency, Dr Tshepo Mahanuke, visits the Buccleuch low bridge and shares with the residents on his plans to improve the infrastructure.

After months of the closure and the reopening of the infamous low bridge located in Buccleuch, the area has recently faced another predicament through the presence of heavy rain.

In late October, the bridge’s (located on Bridge Road) surface was ruled unsafe to use due to floods on numerous occasions.

During an inspection, the CEO of the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), Dr Tshepo Mahanuke, former MMC for transport, Funzi Ngobeni, and the Ward 32 councilor, Dimakatso Moloisane, addressed the residents of various matters related to the infrastructure on November 4.

Earlier in the year, the infrastructure was declared unsafe for public usage by JRA officials after a series of vehicles found their way into the river. The decision led to the closure of the bridge for a period of months.

Back in June, JRA officials revamped the bridge temporarily which made it safe and suitable for public usage at the time.

During his visit to the area, Mahanuke shared his plans for improving the bridge with the public, “firstly, I would like to send out my deepest apologies to all those affected. We plan on uplifting the bridge and tackling the issue of littering causing the blockage. Within a couple of weeks, there will be progress.”

“We are pleading with our residents to not litter in the river as it will prolong the progress. Stuff that we found such as building rubbles and a collection of plastic have been the leading causes of floods as they clog the opening of under the bridge,” concluded Moloisane.
