Lynda Shackleford teams up with various entities to reduce land pollution

Ward councillor of ward 103, Lynda Shackleford, states that an additional No Dumping sign will be placed near the bus stop on Hobart Road and William Nicol.

A rise in illegal dumping in Sandton has been an issue for years and many residents have addressed their complaints to ward councillors and the police.

A hotspot for dumping in this area is Hobart Road near the William Nicol Drive bus stop which has led to various entities taking action over the issue.

Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford, who’s at the forefront of keeping her ward clean, rallied representatives from the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Pikitup and local security company Community Active Protection (CAP) to meet at the dumping hotspot on November 4.

At the site, the representatives erected a ‘no dumping’ sign.

“Construction companies are dumping daily in our ward all over, from sand to building rubble, and unfortunately it is getting worse by the day,” she said.

Shackleford said CAP had provided more personnel to tackle the issue. “Pikitup has been removing rubble from this area every week which is an inconvenience to the City. I think people just tend to ignore the by-laws when there is no sign.”

The ward councillor said spotters of various local security companies would take photos of the individuals and their vehicle registrations caught dumping and would be reported to Metro police.

CAP officer Thabile Mlotshwa said, “So far our operations to reduce illegal dumping has been good. We managed to [catch] two truck drivers [dumping] who have been fined. We are hoping to achieve [zero] pollution in the area as it is destroying the beauty [of the area].”
