Bryanston sees uptake in street lighting as City Power hits the ground

Increased street lightings a positive for Bryanston as City Power make the switch from traditional lights to long-lasting LED lighting.

Bryanston ward councillors Emi Koekemoer (Ward 104) and David Potter (102) recently showed appreciation for the installation of streetlights along major roads.

The pair caught up with a team of City Power on Grosvenor Road who were in the process of installing more than 70 streetlights and poles, making the switch over from the traditional yellow streetlights to LED.

According to Koekemoer, the current street lighting situation in her ward, while improving, has been of great concern, having escalated the issue of 224 streetlights in the ward that were not working.

She added that nighttime visibility on main routes such as Grosvenor Road was vitally important due to an increase in crimes of opportunity in the suburb, leaving residents and infrastructure vulnerable.

“The new streetlights will go a long way in contributing to a safer ward 104 and 102.”

The switch over from traditional streetlights to LED lights was introduced in July and the City’s Department of Infrastructure and Services Department announced more than 2 000 LED streetlights had been fitted by the end of August.

According to the department, with a 10 to 15-year lifespan, LED units will save City Power significant maintenance hours that could instead be redirected to upgrading its network and addressing outages and cable theft.

Koekemoer encouraged residents to continue reporting broken or vandalised streetlights to City Power on the citypower.mobi app or contact the call centre on 0860 56 28 74.
