Bryanston dog walker shares his love for animals

Meet local dog walker and sitter Prince Bernard who turned his love for fitness and animals into a full-time business.

Dog walkers have become an important part of many households across the Sandton and extended communities.

While the role of a dog walker ranges from providing food and water to the disposal of waste, above all, they provide companionship when dog owners may not always be available, be it during work hours or vacation time.

Meet Bryanston’s very own resident dog walker and pet sitter Prince Bernard who, during the pandemic, combined his love for fitness and animals and shared it with the community.

While he only started dog walking and pet sitting in September 2020, Bernard comes highly recommended in a number of online community groups.

“When Covid-19 hit, the world changed all of a sudden and I had nothing going on, the only skill I had was fitness training which wasn’t doing so well due to public distance and space. So I asked myself what else am I good at and the answer was right there in front of me – taking care of animals.”

Bernard decided to take the leap and put himself out there, scouting for clients and furry friends looking for part-time companions.

“At first I was thinking it was going to be a part-time thing, but when I did my research I discovered that a lot of people needed a dog walker and going into the pet industry can be a full-time job.

“I have always been a lover of creatures, both wild and domestic, I have had pets of my own.”

Over the years the local dog walker has met dozens of animals across the community.

“One of the things that I love about what I do is that I get to spend more time with dogs than humans. I’m still learning and trying to understand them better.”
