Sandton SPCA ‘Spaytember’ sees over 1 000 animals sterilised

In an effect to curb animal abuse, Sandton SPCA sterilised over 1 000 animals throughout the month of September.

Did you know that a female dog can produce two litters of six to 10 puppies a year? This means that one unspayed female and her offspring can produce 67 000 dogs in just six years.

In an effect to help prevent unwanted litters, which in turn curbs animal abuse, the Sandton SPCA celebrated the success of its Spaytember campaign which saw the sterilisation of more than 1 000 animals in the month of September.

According to general manager Meg Wilson, the phenomenal team worked hard to sterilise 50 animals per day.

“Anyone that knows us knows that we don’t shy away from a challenge and so we immediately got to work.”

She added that to prepare for the marathon of a month, the team trained by starting practice-sterilisation days through August until they were ready to take on 50 sterilisations on a daily basis.

As of September 15, the team hit the 500-animal mark and by September 30, 1 000 feral cats, domestic cats, dogs and even rabbits had been sterilised.

Sandton SPCA general manager Meg Wilson is proud of her team’s hard work throughout the month.

“We have had our ups and downs, tears and laughter, frustrations, and challenges with load-shedding and keeping our theatre powered – but this journey has brought our team, our community, local businesses and other animal welfare organisations together,” said Wilson.

The Sandton SPCA is also grateful to the community for its support throughout the month of Spaytember.

“We are truly humbled by the support received and have had our eyes opened more to the great need out there for veterinary assistance in impoverished areas – our veterinary clinic is vital for our impoverished community, and we will do whatever we can to ensure its sustainability.”

Over 1 000 animals were sterilised during the month of September.
