Guests happy with The Suspended Man movie

One of the directors of The Suspended Man movie, Bruce Crossey, shares his inspirations and memories of creating the film with guests during a private viewing of the movie at Wynberg.

The official previewing of The Suspended Man which was directed by the duo, Shane Comley-White and Bruce Crossey, had viewers from all races and ages clapping with excitement after the closing credits.

With no more than 35 participants, the intimate gathering, which was held at the Thrst Group facility in Wynberg, offered guests an experience of a lifetime by watching an original film narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Eric Roberts on August 27.

Inspired by Crossey’s poem, the film directs its attention on a black man based in the township of Alexandra who is determined to make a name for himself. Each scene was in sync with the delivery of Roberts’s voice.

“The movie was emotive, it stresses the differences of people and their surroundings while wanting the goodness out of life. We might all be in the same storm but we’re not in the same boat,” said Nikki Paarman, one of the guests of the film preview.

Crossey explained, “During one of my test weeks in varsity I was looking out of my window as we were approaching Pretoria using Gautrain. I saw an old man who was wearing a dapper suit, a pointy hat, and formal shoes with a briefcase. He was walking on the train tracks and he had this look of determination and I thought to myself, why do I feel like giving up when someone who has been through tough times more than myself is still determined to preserve? It changed how I viewed things.”

Enos Mathavela who played the main character stated that he had never acted. His old friend Crossey approached him with the idea of the film and he instantly went with it.

“I was surprised when the guys said they wanted me. I opened my home to them during the filming at Alexandra which was nice. I enjoyed myself and I hope to make more movies with them.”
