Montrose Primary School celebrates Book Character Day with learners

Head of languages of Montrose Primary School Eugene Heine gets into the spirit of career day with his learners and shares the importance of reading.

The majority of the Montrose Primary Schools learners based in Parkmore were given the chance to dress up as their favourite book characters.

The bright sunny day of August 12 seemed to be like any other normal day despite one small change, fictional and non-fictional characters all attended school.

The day known as Book Character Day for the Grade 1 to 6 learners of Montrose offered each individual the platform to be their favourite book or even movie character.

Firefighters, princesses and even Batman were among those who shared their heroic stories with their peers – and it was nothing short of amazing.

Some teachers and staff members could not resist participating. Principal Sonette van Loggerenberg was replaced by the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland for the day and, instead of causing havoc, the character roamed school playing I spy.

“We had it since 2002 and the main purpose of book day and career day is for the learners to develop that love of reading. Learners go home, choose a book of their own choice, find a character which they loved and dress up like them. With the Grade 7s we decided back in 2018 to have a career day where they dress up as their future career profession which is linked to a life orientation curriculum that we have,” said Heine.
