Volunteers summit Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of SPCA

Volunteer organisation Kusudi La took fundraising to new heights with a Mount Kilimanjaro summit aimed at raising much-need funds for the Sandton and Johannesburg SPCAs.

Fourteen climbers recently took on the challenge of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise much-needed funds for the Sandton and Johannesburg SPCAs.

Teams travelled for seven days, beginning on July 2, to Tanzania with the Kusudi La volunteer organisation, taking in the breathtaking views and beautiful plant life as they neared their goal of reaching the peak.

Kusudi La founder Stephanie Brown has always had a passion and interest in animal welfare, that is how the idea for the first climb for the Sandton SPCA began in 2012. This year climbers hailed from Canada, Holland and South Africa.

“Many of our climbers have been waiting since 2020 for their Kilimanjaro so it was so exciting to be climbing at last. Yet again, we had an amazing group of people who not only wanted to climb Kilimanjaro, but to join in a common purpose to raise funds for animal welfare.”

Volunteer Zanri Marais added that it was exciting to finally get out there and take on the summit. Each person took turns carrying Tanzi, the plush dog mascot, and a flag with all the names of the pets from people who sent in donations.

“We missed out on two years of Kilimanjaro thanks to Covid, but this group climbing was proof that the human spirit is undefeatable – with enough motivation and some animal welfare inspiration, the sky isn’t even the limit,” she said.

Twelve of the 14 climbers successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, this included 14-year-old Jayden Peiser.

“The climb was definitely an experience of a lifetime. It was great to be able to climb for a good cause and to fulfil a personal goal to climb Africa’s tallest mountain,” said Johannesburg SPCA board member Sandra Cheung.

The group are hoping to exceed their R250 000 fundraising goal so if you are interested in being part of or donating to this paw-some cause, visit www.kusudi-la.com or email ask@kusudi-la.com.
