Sandton Chronicle thanks blood donors for bravery on World Blood Donor Day

The goal of World Blood Donor Day is mainly to thank the donors for contributing to saving lives.

As June finally reaches the halfway mark, the month highlights parts of history that honours life such as Youth Day and Pride Month.

One awareness campaign in particular that literally has the element of life or death is the World Blood Donor Day on June 14.

World Blood Donor Day raises the awareness of the need of blood worldwide and also takes a moment to thank the donors, volunteers and the workers of blood banks.

As stated by the World Health Organisation [WHO], the main purpose of the campaign is:

q Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions.

q To thank and honour those blood donors who make transfusion possible.

According to the South African National Blood Service [SANBS], the organisation aims to collect 3 000 units of blood per day to ensure sufficient supply of blood to the nation. If you have any queries in connection to the SANBS, please contact the organisation on
