Johannesburg Road Agency share progress on low-water bridge in Buccleuch

Spokesperson of the Johannesburg Road Agency Mosa Makhalima shares the current state of the construction of the low-water bridge in Buccleuch.

After a four-month wait, residents situated in Buccleuch have finally received the answer that they have been looking for with regard to the low-water bridge.

Operations to restore the structure back to its safe form and function have recently been made by the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA).

The low-water bridge located in Buccleuch was declared unsafe and unstable for public usage by the agency after a series of heavy rainfall which flooded the bridge back in early February.

A resident addressed the challenges that they faced before the construction of the bridge. “We have to add up to 40 minutes of extra travel time in the mornings. People drive their cars in the oncoming lane in desperation to exit Buccleuch in a hurry. Checkers have stopped delivering groceries to our area because of the extra petrol costs,” said Buccleuch resident Rishadh Mahabeer.

The agency was able to comment on the matter with good news for the residents despite not having a fixed date for the reopening of the bridge. Spokesperson of the JRA Mosa Makhalima mentioned the progress of the bridge. “Currently, the project is not on the list of the 22/23 financial year. However, in the interim our maintenance team is currently busy reinstating the washed away sections and once complete, the road will be reopened.”

Brando Naidoo, a resident who has been living near the infamous bridge for 20 years, shared his take on the progres of the newly developed bridge. “The development so far has been excellent.

The JRA members have been working every day since they started. You can clearly see the difference as you stand close to the bridge. Without a doubt, you must give credit where credit is due.”
