Police recover unlicensed firearms and stolen cars

A joint operation by police and private security recently led to an arrest and the recovery of unlicensed firearms and two vehicles that were reportedly hijacked in Pretoria and Sandton.

The recent arrest of a 28-year-old suspect led to the recovery of two unlicensed firearms and two vehicles that were reportedly hijacked in Pretoria and Sandton.

A joint operation between law enforcement and private security companies responded to information about a group committing hijackings and armed robberies across the province, using high-performance vehicles.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, teams intercepted the suspects in the Kempton Park area.

“The suspects sped off, resulting in a high-speed chase and shootout. [A] BMW was found abandoned and [an] Audi S3 was cornered. One suspect was arrested after two unlicensed firearms, ammunition and numerous vehicle registration plates were found inside the vehicles.”

A preliminary investigation revealed that both vehicles were fitted with false registration plates.

Masondo added police were still on the lookout for the suspects who escaped from the scene.
