Police warn against spreading unconfirmed information

SAPS warns against spreading false information and causing fear and panic on social media.

The South African Police Service has cautioned social media users spreading unconfirmed information.

This follows a viral social media post claiming that two women were allegedly bungled into two vehicles at a local night club in Woodmead.

A second viral social media post reported that a 33-year-old male was missing after he was last seen leaving the same nightclub in Woodmead on April 29.

According to provincial spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello, investigations found that the two women mentioned in the first incident were in fact picked up by their next of kin.

Investigations also revealed that the allegedly missing individual was unfortunately involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident while he was walking back to his place of residence.

His next of kind has been notified.

“The management of the SAPS in Gauteng cautions social media users to refrain from circulating and spreading unverified messages that seek to cause fear and panic among communities,” said Sello.
