Young climbers vie for top spot

The event saw young climbers from all around the country compete for a spot in the national squad.

Climbers from Sandton and surrounding areas gave it their all at the recent South African National Climbing Federation Championship in Cape Town.

The event, which served as a selection for international events, saw young climbers from all across the country compete for a spot in the national squad set to compete in the IFSC Youth World Championships in the USA later this year.

Noticeable mention went to Naureen Bretherick, Ethan Pearman, Beatrix Mills, Joshua Myers and Lauren Mukheibir.

According to Ziyad Adroos, president of Gauteng Climbing, the standard of climbing was tremendously high at the event.

“We are immensely proud of our athletes and what they have achieved, notwithstanding the impact that Covid has had on the sport. While it was great to compete in the Mother City, we look forward to hosting the competition next year on home turf.”
