Brescia House athlete takes gold

Brescia House School’s young swimmer Isla Thomas recently gave it her all the South African Regional Swimming Championships.

Brescia House School’s multitalented athlete Isla Thomas has done it again, achieving another gold medal to her collection.

The young athlete, who also competes in biathle, triathle and fencing, recently achieved gold in the 100m butterfly at the South African Regional Swimming Championships.

According to Isla, it was amazing but tough participating in the gala because competing in this age group was new to her.

“I moved up into the 14-year-old age category just a week before the gala so I was very happy that I made the qualifying time and could compete – even though I knew it would be tough as I was going to be the youngest in the pool.”

Nonetheless, the young swimmer gave it her all and in turn, qualified for the finals in each event. The final rounds saw Isla achieve personals bests in each event.

“It was a tough gala as I had to write my school exams at 06:00 before going to swim. But I was really happy that I qualified for all four finals and managed to swim personal bests,” said Isla.

She added that on the final day of the gala, she was very nervous to be competing in the 100m butterfly event but continued to push herself.

“In the heats, I had a fantastic swim and was seeded number one with a personal best time. In the finals, I managed to take another second off my time and win the final and win the gold! Best feeling ever!”

Isla continues to work hard, excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for her.
