Bryanston parkrun highlights International Women’s Day

BRYANSTON – Whether you walk the dogs, jog, run, volunteer or support others, everyone is welcome join the Bryanston parkrun.

As part of its commitment to driving female participation, the Bryanston parkrun commemorated International Women’s Day with a special event.

While the global day is celebrated on March 8, the local parkrun highlighted the occasion on March 5 by encouraging parkrunners to bring their female friends, relatives and colleagues along to participate.

“On the day, over 400 parkrunners participated, with almost half the field being female. This year’s event was also managed by an all-male team of volunteers, ensuring all the regular female volunteers got a chance to participant on this special day,” said event director Avi Naidoo.

To celebrate the occasion, the Riverside Fresh Fruit and Flower Shop also donated roses which went to the first 20 female participants.

Naidoo added that parkrun continues to strive to make each event safe, fun and inclusive for all participants all while acknowledging that many women and girls face very real barriers in taking part in physical activities.

“Parkrun tries to address the fears of walking or running in public, the fear of coming alone, to feeling nervous about what to do on arrival, or worrying about coming last.”

The Bryanston parkrun, which only recently returned after a two-year hiatus, is a free community event that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities to complete a 5km stretch around Riverside Park every Saturday morning at 08:00.

Whether you walk the dogs, jog, run, volunteer or support others, everyone is welcome.
