City debt revenue collection campaign hits Sandton

SANDTON – Buya Mthetho touches down in Sandton as the City of Johannesburg aims to collect on its property and utility backlogs.

Municipal entities of the City of Johannesburg and members of its mayoral committee took to the streets of Sandton on February 16 in line with its Buya Mthetho campaign.

The campaign aims to drive revenue debt collection, which according to the City, currently sits at an estimated R38 billion.

The operation on February 16 visited nine locations of non-paying account holders in Bryanston, Sandown and Morningside.

The account holders were previously served with notices by the City but the grace period has ended.

As a result, municipal entities such as City Power and Johannesburg Water have cut off their services with immediate effect.

According to Executive Mayor Mpho Phalatse, in order for the City to fully operate and deliver the services that it requires, ratepayers must play their part.
