Matric learners ready to face the world

BRYANSTON – The 2021 Kings College Grade 12 learners acquired a 100% pass on IEB examinations.

The 2021 Grade 12 top performer, Tayla Holding, at the Kings College in Bryanston, plans to study Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees (MBChB) either at Witwatersrand University or Stellenbosch University.

She said her matric journey was challenging but she constantly competed with herself rather than her peers. “It was literally just me pushing and trying to improve in that sense,” she said.

Tayla received an outstanding achievement mention from the IEB and placed in the top 1% of candidates per subject for mathematics (99%), English home language (93%) and history (97%) in IEB examinations.

About 44 learners sat for the IEB examinations last year at the Kings College and acquired 100% pass rate with 93 distinctions. Five learners at the school scored in the top 1% of candidates per subject, while the school produced 94% of bachelor’s admissions and 6% of diploma admissions.

Learners celebrated their matric results during a ceremony held at the school on the morning of 19 January.
Tayla said high school academics were never about being number one but it was more of a competition with herself. “Although finding that balance between studying and life is never easy it is very necessary.”

Simangaliso Mdlalose, who wants to study a law degree in the United States of America, said matric had a huge significance in his life as he could now branch out to face the real world.

Personally, I have always had the dream of studying overseas and lucky enough, when I was in Grade 11, I registered on the IAM360 programme that allowed me to try and get a scholarship to study overseas.”
