Communities encouraged to stay vigilant

JOBURG – Staying alert during all hours of the day and enhancing home security can help to prevent a number of crimes from taking place.

With the holiday season fast approaching, police has sent out a word of warning to various communities to remain vigilant in order to avoid being hijacked.

In pamphlets handed out during a recent domestic workers’ forum, hijacking was said to be part of the trio crimes alongside house and business robberies.

Here are some tips to keep in order to avoid being hijacked:

  • Avoid being alone in a vehicle when travelling at night.
  • Do not stop around hijacking spots or at any secluded area.
  • Always be alert when driving. If you suspect you are being followed by a suspicious vehicle, get to your nearest police station or call the emergency 10111 number.
  • Do not pick up hitchhikers, especially when driving alone.
  • Avoid distractions such as being on your phone, drinking and driving.
  • Increase your caution at intersections – always keep a look out for people loitering around your car, or for any sudden activity around your car.
