Sandton police protect the community during municipal elections

SANDTON – Sandton police officers took on the important task of protecting registered voters and the members of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) during the election on November 1.

The unsung heroes who supported the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) day in, day out with external structure and protection at the municipal election, were the Sandton police officers.

Sandton police officers took on the important task of protecting registered voters and the members of the IEC from harm during the election on November 1. The 19 voting stations in Sandton and each had a minimum of two officers facilitating and patrolling the area on the day.

Sandton Police Station Commander, Brigadier Egen Moodley, and his team prevented any sight of disruptions from occurring during the voting period and the transportation of the votes. “The challenges were not related to the police. We received numerous complaints from community members who mistakenly went to voting stations which they were not registered in. There was a bit of confusion but they were assisted and redirected to the correct voting station by the IEC,” said the station commander.

Police officers were required to be at each voting station from the start to the end of the elections. Further instructions were given to them to invigilate the counting process of the votes which lasted days in some voting stations.

All police officers were given the opportunity to vote from October 29 to 31.
