Bryanston Scouts take the shield

BRYANSTON – This year marked the 25th edition of the patrol-based competition, organised for Scout Groups in the Gauteng region.

The 1st Bryanston Scout Group’s Springbok Patrol was the victors of this year’s annual Kim Shield competition.

This year marked the 25th edition of the patrol-based competition, organised for Scout Groups in the Gauteng region.

This year the competition format was changed from an overnight hike to a single-day hike which saw participants make their way along Braamfontein Spruit from Emmarentia to Craighall Park.

Angus Hay, representative for Gauteng Scouts, was excited to once again see scouting in action outdoors as many of the training programmes were forced to explore online options due to the pandemic.

“The organisers did a great job in arranging a distributed event, where over 400 Scouts and their leaders could participate, while still ensuring that all the necessary Covid-19 safety protocols were observed,” said Hay.

The Scouts completed a number of fun and challenging activities, which included axe throwing, orienteering, secret codes and ciphers, air-rifle shooting, pioneering, and various other team-building games and initiative tests.

In the end, the Springbok Patrol from Bryanston, which included Scout members Mia Simon, Andrew Wilson, Kadyn Eckert, Simon Pienaar and JC Bezuidenhout, took home the win.

Patrol leader of the Springboks Patrol Simon Pienaar was thrilled with the outcome after a second-place finish in last year’s virtual competition.

The local Sandton district was well represented in the final results with the Buffalo Patrol from 1st Peter Place Scout Group finishing in second place.

Third place went to the Leopards Patrol of the 1st Eagles Scout Group from the West Rand district.
