Locals bridge the gap in education especially for Grade 12 learners

SANDTON – The MasterClasses now cover the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) curricula along with that of the Independent Examinations Board.

Nearing almost two years into the pandemic, Grade 12 learners across the country have no doubt lost a number of school days.

In an effort to ensure that these lost days do not affect the academic performance of the matriculating class, Subjex has partnered with Redhill School and has expanded its MasterClass Series.

The series now offers a package of online lessons covering 13 subjects for private and public school learners.

According to Subjex founders Max Coleman and Jack Scott-King, the price of this year’s packages has been decreased in an effort to make it more accessible.

“Our goal is to democratise education. Particularly in today’s tough economic climate, we want to ensure that all learners can access the same tools and resources regardless of their social or economic backgrounds.”

Coleman matriculated from St David’s Marist Inanda 2019 while, in the same year, Scott-King matriculated from St John’s College.

The duo added that it was important to include the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) curricula along with that of the Independent Examinations Board.

“We got great feedback from learners after we offered free access to two DBE subjects for those who initially had to rewrite last year. Even though the rewrites eventually did not happen, it made us realise the impact these MasterClasses could have on the broader population.”

According to Redhill School executive head Joseph Gerassi, it made sense to make these MasterClasses available to as many matric learners in both private and public schools as possible.

“There is an urgent need to recover as much learning as possible in the coming months without adding an additional financial burden on financially-strained parents.”
