Climbers celebrate a decade of Trek4Mandela

RIVONIA – The Caring4Girls programme was founded in response to research that found that girls from disadvantaged backgrounds can miss up to 50 days of school each year due to menstrual-related challenges.

 

The Trek4Mandela team celebrated 10 years of fighting against period poverty.

The committed team summited Mount Kilimanjaro for the 10th time on July 18 in honour of Mandela Day. The expedition is aimed at bringing together inspired individuals from corporate and public backgrounds to raise funds and create awareness for the Caring4Girls programme at the Rivonia-based Imbumba Foundation.

The Caring4Girls programme was founded in response to research that found that girls from disadvantaged backgrounds can miss up to 50 days of school each year due to menstrual-related challenges.

The expedition was established by social entrepreneur and Imbumba Foundation founder Richard Mabaso and led by adventurer and motivational speaker Sibusio Vilane.

The team was joined by the likes of Professor Thuli Madonsela; director of supply chain and business management at Nando’s, Linda Reddy; Omame Investments CEO Njabulo Sithole; and deputy president for the Black Management Forum (BMF) Tasneem Fredericks.

“I’m going back to summit Kilimanjaro to raise funds to end period poverty for girls in honour of Nelson Mandela’s birthday and exemplary ubuntu reflected in selfless service to humanity,” said Madonsela who joined the Trek4Mandela team for a second time.

She added that the quest was also about unfinished personal business with Kilimanjaro and her quest to rally all of those around her for an all-hands-on-deck collaboration to accelerate progress on social justice for all, with no one left behind.

With the help of is year’s expedition and the funds raised, the Trek4Mandela team aim to reach an additional one million girls through the Caring4Girls programme.

The programme aims to reach an estimated 100 000 girls from each of the nine provinces as well as 50 000 girls in Tanzania, and a further 50 000 from Swaziland, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana.
