SANDTON – Additional security measures have, however, been put in place across the centre to ensure the safety and security of shoppers and tenants.

Update: 3.35pm

Tenants at Benmore Shopping Centre in Sandton have closed their shops following a threat of protest action at the shopping centre.

Speaking to The Chronicle, centre management said that a majority of the stores closed as a precaution but there are no protests, looting or damage currently taking place at the shopping centre.

“The centre is still open, Pick n Pay is still trading and Woolworths will close within the next hour.”

Reporting from the shopping centre, Sandton Chronicle journalist Motlatsi Mailula noted that there were no shoppers throughout the vicinity.

An eyewitness at the centre said, an individual yelled the word “looting” and it caused mayhem.

No looting was however taking place at any of the stores.

Other centres like Epsom Downs also temporally closed as a safety precaution.

Original story:

Sandton City shopping centre has warned against a misleading evacuation video circulating on social media on July 12.

In the wake of the violent protests going on in and around the city, the centre management has knowledged the video on social media.

According to the centre management on social media, the video is from an incident that occurred in April this year. “[It] is not connected to the ongoing violent protests in and around Johannesburg.”

Additional security measures have, however, been put in place across the centre to ensure the safety and security of shoppers and tenants.

“Together with the South African Police Service, Sandton City will continue to monitor the situation, and is currently operating as per normal, as a Covid-19 compliant, Safe-certified shopping centre,” concluded the centre in a social media post.
