Sandton SPCA closed to the public until 28 June

SANDTON – The SPCA’s inspectorate will still be attending to cruelty matters and animal emergencies during this time.

Sandton SPCA has been temporarily closed after five team members tested positive for Covid-19 this past week.

The new general manager at Sandton SPCA, Meg Wilson said many other team members had been in contact with the members who tested positive.

“We are trying to ensure that we don’t contribute any more to the increase of infections during this third wave – keeping members of the public, volunteers and our staff as safe as possible,” added Wilson.

She said the SPCA’s inspectorate would still attend to cruelty matters and animal emergencies during this time.

The SPCA is expected to reopen on 28 June. From then on, community members must make an appointment to view animals up for adoption and there will be safe, contactless points for physical donations available.

Wilson said Sandton SPCA was taking strain financially.

“The Sandton SPCA covers a large area, a lot of which are severely impoverished areas. The need is great – with an increase in surrendered animals due to communities that we serve not being able to afford care for them anymore…”

She said Sandton SPCA worked tirelessly to support the communities it served, not only for the protection of many vulnerable animals but also the protection of the community.

“Animal abuse is very rarely a standalone crime – if an animal is being abused, the chances are that people are too.

“Within our intervention in crimes against animals, this often leads to intervention in crimes against humans.”
