Heading police visibility at the Sandton Police Station

SANDTON– Head of the Visible Policing department, Colonel Cain Sibitane has been in service for 30 years and still dedicated to his work.

Colonel Cain Sibitane from the Sandton Police Station has been in service for over 30 years.

Sibitane started his journey at just 21 years old, at the provincial offices where he was a member in the flying squad.

He joined the Sandton Police Station in 2017 where he became the head of the Visible Police (VISPOL) department.

He mentioned that police work is indeed a calling.

“Thinking back to some of the incidents that I have been involved in, it comes with the satisfaction when someone actually appreciates your work. For me especially, when I assist residents and they take the time to say thank you, it gives me this sense of accomplishment.”

Being in the force for so many years, Sibitane said that some of the lessons learnt was to listen to the people and community, have no judgment and remain humble.

“If you are able to engage with people and avail yourself to the community and be that sort of go-to member for each and every situation this will help people believe in you. At times I do feel challenged but that’s always good as it motivates me more. I want to assist my members to be better leaders in order to uplift other members. ” said the colonel.

As a respected member of the force, Sibitane offered advice to incoming SAPS members and young officers on the ground already.

“Something to remember when you are here is that as a policeman, you are here as a public servant. Respect always comes first and discipline is important. Officers need to develop a thick skin so that they don’t take certain things personally.”

He added that having a good attitude and becoming more understanding is all part of the police game.

Sibitane also mentioned that the residents of Sandton are a close-knit community and as an officer in the area, one must always be ready to assist.

“We would also like to urge the community to be patient and try understand the difficult situations that we sometimes face. We as policemen are the same people coming from the same community and we are determined by the attitude of the community in order for us to work together and work well. “
