Two shot, four arrested in foiled robbery on M1 near Woodmead

WOODMEAD – Traffic has been severely affected.

Update 3.25pm:

SAPS provincial spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo has confirmed that two suspects were fatally shot and four others were arrested this afternoon (21 April) following a shootout with police on the M1 Highway near the Woodmead off-ramp.

According to Masondo, crime intelligence officers recieved information about a robbery that was going to take place in Johannesburg. 

Officers of the Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Unit and Johannesburg Flying Squad acted on the information and remained on standby.

“At about 11.45am today, three cars, two Audi A4s and Hyundai i20, with 10 suspects were spotted on the highway. The suspects then fired some shots at a white Toyota Fortune forcing it to stop.”

“Police intercepted the suspects who fired shots at the police and shootout ensued.”

Two suspects were fatally wounded while four others were arrested on the scene.

One firearm was recovered and the three cars involved in the incident were seized. 

Masondo noted that police were on the hunt for four suspects who remained at large.

Reports have surfaced on social media that there has been a shooting on the M1 near the Woodmead on-ramp.

SAPS provincial spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo has confirmed that there is an active scene but cannot update the community on any details at present.

JMPD issued a statement, “Shooting Incident on the M1 north Woodhead exit. The road has been closed off to traffic due to the crime scene. Expect heavy delays. Motorists are advised to avoid the use Pretoria Main Road and Western Service Roads alternatives.”

It has been alleged that on 21 April, three suspects were shot and one has died. Law enforcement is on the scene. Traffic is severely affected.
