Cover Drive Cricket School outlines its goals for the rest of the 2020/21 season

BRYANSTON – Local cricket club plays it safe during lockdown.

One-on-one cricket training is on the go at Cover Drive Cricket School until the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) permits non-professional matches resume.

Players at the Bryanston High School-based outfit have benefitted from this exclusive attention from their coaches but cannot wait to get back onto the field in a contest.

“Lots of players have shown an interest in joining us as there is no school cricket currently,” explained head coach Sydwell Maringa.

“Players and their parents have also asked all about our safety protocols before coming, which is responsible. We do temperature checks, sanitising, social distancing and parents can watch the practice from a distance.”

He added that it is not in the nature of a sportsperson to remain indoors for long, and the hardest stages of lockdown were tough on his players.

It was for this reason the group had fitness sessions online on Zoom until they were allowed to return to training.

The cricket school features teams at U9, U11, U15 and U17 level and plays in CGL Sunday Leagues, the T20 Black Widow Tournaments and the Joburg Junior Winter League Tournament.

“We are still in the 2020/21 season so when it resumes we have some goals we want to achieve,” Maringa added.

“Our Sunday 7 team aims to finish near the top of the log and earn promotion to Sunday 6 for next season. We have had an average season and will need to work on our consistency when we return. In our younger section we are developing as a team and individuals. I want the players to enjoy the game as much as possible and develop correct habits they can carry through to the rest of their careers.”

The coach wants these good habits to not just be just about skill and technique, but positive culture and discipline. Because if these habits are formed, Maringa believes, everything else will fall into place.
