Clean-up operation on Rivonia bridge

Police removed everyone and took all the waste and rubbish in the surroundings of that area.

A joint operation between Sandton police and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) saw the inspection and clean-up of the 11th Avenue bridge in Rivonia on 19 November.

According to Sandton Police Station spokesperson Captain Bheki Xulu, several complaints were reported to the station about displaced people sleeping on the bridge, erecting illegal temporary structures, littering, drinking in public and harassing community members when they are waiting at the bus stop.

“Police removed everyone and took all the waste and rubbish in the surroundings of that area. People were searched for any illegal items and a few municipal wheel bins were recovered,” he said.

Bheki added that the bridge will continue to be monitored by law enforcement agencies and the community. “Criminals can use this situation as an opportunity for robbery.”

Members of the community are encouraged to report any criminal activities or suspicious activities happening in the area to 08600 10111 or the Sandton Police Station on 011 722 4200.
