Maths boffins at King David Primary School

King David Primary School in Sandton had learners participate in the prestigious Wits Mathematics Competition.

King David Primary School in Sandton had learners participate in the prestigious Wits Mathematics Competition.

In its third year running, co-founder and maths boffin Johnathan Kariv said that the competition is all about problem-solving and critical thinking.

Open to all learners in South Africa, learners from King David Primary Sandton really excelled.

Mathematics HOD Linda Fine said that she is happy and excited that the learners have taken a keen interest in the subject.

“A prestigious competition in our school, we had three placings countrywide! This is the third year we have participated and I must say the learners really stepped up.”

Going digital this year, Fine said that it was a tough challenge to adapt.

“We all had to adjust but I do think we all learnt a new skill. The kids themselves actually started to enjoy it. The only thing was that they were separated from their friends,”

She did, however, say that she missed the human interaction while in lockdown.

“Nothing beats facetime and being in a classroom with a child. The first round of the competition was online. I must say our learners really rose to the challenge. I’m very proud of them. It’s not just an ordinary maths test, these kids have to learn to think out of the box and be creative and critical thinkers.”

Fine added that with the support from parents as well, the desired outcome was achieved.

Learners Matt Fanaroff, Caleb Levitan, Noa Sirton, Alissa Kirkel, Aidan Goralsky and Daniel Markman all went through to the second round.

The school showed great results in the middle primary section where they placed 8th in Gauteng and 9th overall. The senior primary section came 6th in Gauteng and 7th overall.

This year the competition had 3 5000 participants which was quite large due to the pandemic.
