Sandton SPCA unpacks the successes of 2020

SANDTON – The refurbishment and expansion of the clinic will be a welcome addition to the SPCA.

Acting general manager at Sandton SPCA Nick Smith said, “The best gift 2021 can give us is the knowledge that the work we do in our communities makes a difference in the lives of pets and their owners.”

Reflecting on the year, Smith added that the refurbishment and expansion of their clinic has been a welcome highlight.

“When it is completed, it will significantly increase the capacity and biosecurity of our facility. This means that we can accommodate the ever-increasing demand for animal care from impoverished people who cannot afford the services of a private veterinarian for the treatment and sterilisation of their animals.”

Smith said he was proud of the SPCA’s outreach activities in Bertrams and Alexandra where the organisation scheduled the collection of between 15 and 20 dogs and cats each week, which were brought to the facility to be sterilised and treated. The animals are then returned to their owners with a bag of food, bedding and other treats.

“We hope that by consistently providing this service and educating the owners, in time this initiative will reduce the burden placed upon us of abandoned, unwanted and stray animals being brought to the SPCA.”

The Sandton SPCA team also expanded their inspectorate department to include seven trained inspectors to deliver the five animal freedoms.

“The biggest highlight has been the unwavering support of all our supporters and stakeholders without whom we would not be able to help the animals.”

Smith said while monetary donations had slowed down, he was thankful for the ongoing support of many.

He advised locals to make arrangements for their pets if they planned to go away during the festive season. He also advised owners to ensure their pets were tagged and microchipped and put measures in place to ensure their safety ahead of the season of fireworks.

Smith encouraged residents to support the SPCA’s gift-wrapping service at Sandton City this festive season. He also urged corporates to consider the SPCA as part of their Corporate Social Investment programme.
