The Grade 7s at Bryanston Primary School participated in an exciting and uplifting cultural experience at the Drum Café just before the lockdown.
The café is synonymous with a unique, interactive way of bringing people together and transforming groups into percussive ensembles within minutes.
An internal art competition was launched at the school where learners were asked to produce a painting depicting the performance and their participation.
Visual arts teacher at the school Louise Chelius said, “Music and arts are joys of humanity. An interesting and creative way to expand on music is to convert your experience into a visual art piece. Combining the two into a competition – with a surprise drum as the prize – has added a whole new dimension to our cultural art and music activities and engagement amongst our students.”
Chelius said that especially during the lockdown, participating in creative and performing arts has helped many students with their physical and mental well-being allowing learners to relax while being inspired and challenged.
The internal competition was judged on how well participants translated their performances on the drums and experience of the music into the composition of the artwork and on artistic focus, originality, colours and forms.
Grade 7 learner Anuhmia Maduray won the competition and the prize of the drum from the Drum Café.
Anuhmia responded saying, “I am so excited about my drum. I loved participating in and painting my artwork. Now I have something that I can treasure always from the experience.”
