Highway Nightmare Nearly hijacked in the middle of accident Glenhove M1 north highway seemingly a hijack hotspot

The attempted hijacking took place right next to an accident scene where a truck had overturned on the Glenhove M1 north highway towards Sandton.

A resident recently shared the ordeal she and her family went through during an alleged attempted hijacking.
The attempted hijacking took place right next to an accident scene where a truck had overturned on the Glenhove M1 north highway towards Sandton.

Recounting the incident, Megan Lubke said it occurred at lunchtime on 24 August. “We were coming by the highway around the M1 north towards Sandton. The Glenhove offramp was coming up and we were in the fast lane.

“My husband, because he is tall, spotted an accident that had just happened. A truck had just overturned and there was no ambulance or anything yet. He then moved into the middle lane to try and get into the third lane so that we could pass the accident site.”

Lubke added that to move to the third lane, her husband tried to move to the fourth lane and there was a stationary car on the left so they couldn’t go into the last lane. Her husband then noticed a BMW come up on his left-hand side in the middle of the lane.

“He wondered why the guy was so close up to him and as he tried to look up at the accident, I noticed a Toyota Corolla in front of us had started reversing towards us. My husband started hooting. The next thing, two or three people [Lubke couldn’t remember the number] jumped out with guns from the Toyota.”

She said one of the men came knocking on the window on her husband’s side while one was trying to break her window. Another man grabbed the handle of the door where her daughter was sitting, and her husband pulled their daughter to the other side of the seat. The perpetrators managed to snap the car key in the ignition and just drove off. She assumes the BMW was a decoy.

Lubke added that a witness managed to take down the licence plate number of the Toyota. Tow truck men arrived and told them there had recently been a shootout at the same spot by men allegedly fitting the same description.
She the incident was initially reported to Sandton Police Station but was transferred to Norwood. Norwood police spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha said they had received the accident report regarding the case and it would take about two weeks to receive the criminal case details.
