Rotary Satellite Club of Sandton Central lends a helping hand

Its first project which began after the lockdown started, was to provide food parcels to 14 centenarians who reside in the Alexandra area and fresh produce to the Leratong Joy for One Orphanage.

A partnership from within the Rotary community has aided vulnerable residents in Alexandra.

The partnership between the Rotary Satellite Club of Sandton Central and the Rotary Community Corps of Alexandra has targeted the community in a number of weak areas, which includes the provision of food parcels, toys, books and face masks.

The Rotary Satellite Club of Sandton Central, not to be confused with the Rotary Club of Sandton, is a budding Rotary club ‘planted’ in the centre of Sandton by the Rotary Club of Kyalami. Its first project which began after the lockdown started, was to provide food parcels to 14 centenarians who reside in the Alexandra area and fresh produce to the Leratong Joy for One Orphanage.

“This was later followed with donations of additional food and a gas stove by Rotarians in the Sandton Central club. The club was also able to deliver fresh food to the Leratong orphanage that was generously donated by Investec soon after the lockdown started,” said club chair David Grant.

The Sandton Central club later sent out a call to the community of Sandton and Midrand for the donation of toys and books to help children better cope with the circumstances of the lockdown. “This appeal was very successful and many people came forward with generous donations of toys and children’s books,” he said.

The Humble Smile Foundation also came on board and, through the Rotary Community Corps of Alexandra network, donated Gogo Says books and bamboo toothbrushes. The books use the gentle voice of a grandmother to teach children about the importance of respect, positive values and social cohesion.

Grant added that the donated toys were sorted according to suitability and distributed to the children in various orphanages, care centers and social workers with the assistance of the corps and social workers. “The children were ecstatic and took home toys that they selected. In view of the success of this project, the club and corps would like to repeat it.”

The club also organised for 100 masks to be made for the St Joseph Gerald old age home while the corps has received a donation of 400 masks which were donated to the Ithabeleng Organisation for the Disabled, Leratong Joy for One Orphanage, Ithlokomeleng Old Age Home, frontline staff and patients at the Alex Hospice and Rehab Centre, and South African Red Cross volunteers.
