Crawford College plants seeds of hope

SANDTON – Learners from Crawford have committed to planting this vegetable garden for the residents which they can sustain going forward.

Crawford College Sandton, together with the community, has started an awesome initiative.

While the community has continued to buy food to feed 208 informal settlers living close by, they realised that going forward this would not be sustainable, as many of the residents themselves have been affected by the lockdown. According to Crawford’s head of marketing Nadia Cooke, in relation to the famous quote, “You can give a man a fish, he will eat today, teach him to fish he’ll eat forever,” a collection of vegetable seeds was planted.

“Learners from Crawford have committed to planting this vegetable garden for the residents which they can sustain going forward. Four students went on Saturday (23 May) and started the planting procedure. They are now waiting for a bigger piece of land to be cleared so as they can complete this initiative,” Cooke said.

Alisha Khan, David Ewen and Michael Tankle from Crawford were joined by a friend and Redhill School learner, Teagan Noach.”If we start now, who knows the possibilities of what we are able to achieve. This way, by planting vegetables, we are making sustainable changes for the better,” said Michael.
