Brescia dominates the online learning game

BRYANSTON – Brescia House School reaps the rewards of its early integration of technology in teaching as its learners continue to excel through online learning.

Brescia House School’s early integration of technology in teaching has paid off as the learners continue to excel through online learning.

The school was recognised as a Microsoft Showcase School in 2013, allowing both the teachers and learners to develop their skills using all Microsoft applications.

According to Grade 6 English teacher Wendy Sauthoff, this proved beneficial as it took just three days for the school to fully transition into online learning.

Learners from Grade 6 to 12 have their own laptops as part of the school’s one-to-one device programme while laptops were made available to Grade 4 and 5 learners during class.

The foundation phase learners also made use of iPads during the lessons.

Head of Innovation and ICT Lyneth Crighton added that the school was preparing itself for something like this for quite some time now.

“Regular IT training has been on the timetable for teachers which has enabled staff to develop their skills and understanding of a wide range of applications and tools for use in the classroom,” she said.

Sauthoff added that the school adopted a modified timetable to accommodate learners and teachers.

Subject lessons are taught throughout the school which also includes PE lessons where learners have been taught to vacuum, music lessons where they practice songs, science lessons where they have constructed water filters and social sciences lessons where learners have created time capsules.

“What our teachers have learnt is to use what is familiar and build on that knowledge and experience to make remote learning a positive and productive experience for everyone,” said Ann Owgan, head of the primary school.

Loredana Borello, head of the high school, noted that this is an exciting time for the Brescia community.

“I am in awe of our teachers and our students. What they have achieved in such a short space of time is quite remarkable,” Borello said.
