Locals take on the Gauteng Canoe Union Sprint Champs

SANDTON – The sprint championships offered the paddlers an opportunity to be selected to represent Gauteng at the upcoming South African Sprint Championships.


Learners from St David’s Marist Inanda and other local schools took part in the Gauteng Canoe Union Sprint Championships on 16 February at Germiston Lake.

Paddlers between the ages of eight and 18 participated in the junior category races. Race distances included 200m, 500m, 1km and a long course which varied in distance per age group.

The sprint championships offered the paddlers an opportunity to be selected to represent Gauteng at the upcoming South African Sprint Championships set to take place in early April at Shongweni Dam in KwaZulu-Natal. Paddlers earned points towards junior canoeing sport colours as well as the year-end School League Prizegiving.

Adults and older master paddlers also participated in the prestigious event. Paddlers raced in K1s, K2s and K4s.
