Kids Haven reaches out to children on the streets

BRYANSTON – Kids Haven is a children's home in Benoni that was started in 1992.

Kids Haven Donation Centre in Bryanston is appealing for community members to support the NPO which reaches out to children on the streets and others in need.

Kids Haven began as a home for street children in 1992 and has grown to house a number of children from various backgrounds.

According to fundraising manager Susan Daly, “Children on the street are the most unsafe and subject to abuse.”

Daly explained that Kids Haven aims to bring children off the street and experience a sense of belonging. “At Kids Haven, we aim to protect and care for children.”

The NPO offers pre-care in the form of community prevention programmes and keeps families strong so that children do not end up on the street. They also offer an in-care programme housing 163 children where they love and care for children, integrating them back into school or making youth work-ready through skills programmes. The third aspect of the programme is after-care, offering integration of children and youth back into families or into jobs.

The home has four priorities including protection, care, health and education.

“We are trying to take troubled children off the street and support positive behaviour change so that they can become good adults.”

Bryanston residents are encouraged to donate second-hand clothing and food at the donation centre in Main Road, Bryanston. The donor centre can also arrange to pick up items from residents’ homes. Locals are also welcome to volunteer or collect community hours by cooking or cleaning at the donor centre. Companies can also assist by offering job shadowing opportunities for youth at Kids Haven. “This is the place to be if you want to help and be part of protecting and caring for children.”

Daly warned residents to avoid giving money to children on the street but instead, donate to reputable organisations that care for street children. Residents are also encouraged to contact Kids Haven if they see children on the street.
