Bunny Tales rescue Parkmore’s furry friends

PARKMORE – Volunteers from the Bunny Tales Rescue hop along at the Field and Study Park to help sterilise and take care of Sandton bunny residents.

The Bunny Tales Rescue took to the Field and Study Park in Parkmore to help sterilise and rescue its rabbit community. Although the organisation has been able to assist over two dozen bunnies, the team would like to appeal to the community to get involved.

According to one of the organisers and volunteers, Anabel Tout, received word about the park from a number of members in the community. “We also had bunnies coming from the same area which is why we decided to go there and assist the situation,” she said.

Tout added that upon arrival, the volunteers found that the bunnies were breeding at a rapid pace. “Because of the large number, the space is not enough for all of them which is why they go into people’s houses and other areas of the street. In consequence, this creates a situation where people were concerned about them or were upset about having them around their houses.”

Bunny Tales decided to step in and sterilise as many bunnies as it could in order to stop the breeding and control the number of bunnies in the park. “If the population number is controlled through sterilisations, the rest of the bunnies won’t feel the need to move to other areas.”

In order for the bunnies to get the most out of the project, the volunteers have organised for a certain number of bunnies to be caught every week. “Once the bunnies were secure in the carriers, they were transported to the vet to get sterilised and have a cut in their ears to identify they were caught by us. After one or two days they were released back in the area.”

The group has sterilised 33 bunnies from the park and taken in an additional 20 bunnies thus far. With the vet bill totalling just over R14 000, Tout added that they need all the help they can get. “After trying to raise funds through bunny boarding and selling some products we could raise R4 000. We still need to cover the big part of the vet bill and, unfortunately, the vet won’t wait much longer for more payments. This is why we need all kind of assistance towards it.”

The team appealed to the community to get involved by making a small donation or volunteering their time. “Understand the situation, be patient and finally don’t think this is the right place for a bunny and think they can dump their bunny pets here when they don’t longer want them.”
