Residents urged to microchip pets

SANDTON – Sandton SPCA has urged the community to microchip their pets.

Sandton SPCA calls on pet owners to have their animals microchipped.

This call follows an incident on 8 February when a dog was discovered on the side of the M1 highway. When Sandton SPCA inspector Xolane Mnube arrived on the scene, it was discovered that the dog had been hit by a car and had a broken pelvis and was partially paralysed. She was clearly in a critical condition but fortunately had a microchip, enabling Mnube to contact her owners. Unfortunately, the dog had to be humanely euthanised due to the severity of her injuries.

In this case, owners were informed about their dog’s condition and able to get some closure concerning their missing dog’s fate. The SPCA receives a number of calls and emails from concerned pet owners who have lost their pets each day. According to the SPCA, microchipping is an affordable option.

The SPCA also urges locals to report any animals in distress to the Sandton SPCA on the following numbers: 011 444 7730 (during work hours) or 082 460 2765 (after hours in the case of an emergency). If it is possible to stop your vehicle and wait for the SPCA inspector to arrive, motorists are encouraged to do so.

According to a statement by the SPCA, “Providing comfort and basic care to a suffering animal while help is sought is the compassionate thing to do. Many drives or walk past without a second thought or think that ‘someone’ will help the animal. Maybe you can help, even if it is just to make a phone call.”
