BENMORE – Looking to give back to the community? The Wild Lions Club of Johannesburg wants you to get involved.

The Wild Lions Club in Johannesburg would like to encourage the community to get involved and make donations following its monthly meeting which was held on 11 February in Benmore.

The Lions Club is the world’s largest service club organisation with over 1.4 million members in more than 46 000 clubs across 200 countries around the globe. The Johannesburg region collects more than R12 500 worth of items and non-perishable foods from the community each month to distribute to those in need.

Just last week, when a fire struck the home of a family in Craighall as reported in the article Fire ‘sheds’ its load [Week ending 14 February], the club reacted quickly and put together a care package. “When I saw the article in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette, I knew I had to do something. I put together two bags filled with items and dropped it off,” said the club’s president, Mark Meltzer.

The organisation provides regular donations, through the help of food drives and cake sales, to a number of organisations such as the Frida Hartley Shelter for abused and abandoned women and children and the South African Guide-Dogs Association. “Thirty-two donations of R10 000 have been made to the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind to aid in providing a guide dog to someone in need,” Meltzer said.

Members of the Wild Lions Club take weekly donations at the Benmore Shopping Centre in front of Pick n Pay.
