Add avocados on you love list this Valentine’s Day

JOBURG – Think about your other loves this Valentine's Day.

The month of February is full of red, roses, chocolate and all things about love but what if you want something different? Let’s talk about the complex relationship with certain fruit – the avocado.

Those who are not fans of the avocado often use the dreaded word moist to describe their disdain but there is a large group to who can’t get enough of it.

The South African Avocado Growers’ Association has provided five signs you are in love or falling in love with the avocado:

  1. You are addicted: Love literally changes your brain, with heightened dopamine-rich areas of the brain leaving you feeling euphoric and slightly obsessive. The addiction you feel for an actual person is nothing compared to what you feel when you have found the perfect avo. It’s the beautiful green skin, that velvety smooth texture, and that melt-in-your-mouth creaminess and buttery flavour that satisfies all your cravings
  2. You celebrate their success: It’s true that when you are in love you don’t care if the object of your affection is better than you at something. You celebrate their wins, the same can be said when you find avocado on the menu. It just completes the dish.
  3. You miss them when you apart: Avocados come in mass during their season which is usually between March to October, but during the other months they are not as easily accessible, so enjoy the moments while they last
  4. You are a different person when around them: Falling in love can bring positive changes. Being in a trust relationship with avocados can boost your health, it is a good source of potassium and high in monounsaturated fat which can help reduce blood cholesterol levels and lower the risk for heart disease
  5. Jealously: A certain amount of jealousy can be healthy. It is okay to jump to the salad at a family braai to take some of the avos off the top, some don’t like it anyway.

The need and want for avocados is growing worldwide, South Africa is the eighth largest exporter:

So this Valentine’s Day, go on and add avos to your love list.
