Transition Football celebrates a great end to its second year

BRYANSTON – Local high-performance development centre for soccer is still growing after two years.

Transition Football can celebrate the end of a stellar season that saw many achievements by its members.

One development to be celebrated by the high performance-development centre for soccer, which is based at Bryneven Primary School and is only two years old, was the launch of a girls’ programme.

All the centre’s teams that participated in the Soweto Football Association Academy League placed in the top eight of their respective logs, with the U14s and U15s both finishing third.

The U13 side also reached the semi-finals of their cup.

Youngsters who signed for professional clubs include Alwande Ngwenya (15) who moved to Bidvest Wits, and Levi Petersen (18) who was signed by Highlands Park Football Club.

Players from U13 to U15 level attended a training camp in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, and two of the centre’s coaches played for South Africa in the 6-a-side Mini Football World Cup in Perth, Australia.

“It has been a good year for us and we are growing,” said the centre’s director of football, Claudio Lorenzani, who played in Perth (the other player being Marco da Silva).

“Including our development structures, we have about 350 members, which is double that of last year. We have not just seen growth in numbers but improvement in the players, which is important.”

He said the growth in the number of players had much to do with the centre’s involvement in new schools, especially primary schools and the acceptance of children as young as five years old.

The centre now has teams for every age level from five years old to 19.

“Our aim next year is to get a few more players out into big clubs and get proper professional contracts for professional clubs here and in Europe. We also want the children to enjoy themselves, love sport and improve.”
