Double science win for Hyde Park High

HYDE PARK – Hyde Park High scores two wins at the Material Science Poster competition hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials at Wits University.

Hyde Park High School scored a double win as two of its Grade 10 teams excelled at the Material Science Poster competition hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials at Wits University. The annual competition invites Grade 10 learners from schools across Gauteng to submit A3 posters on the properties and applications of strong material.

Zaiden Shaik, Brice Ague and Rivaan Ramdass won the award for Good Scientific Comprehension and Dieter Hartig and Jade Jardine won the award for Presenting New and Exciting Materials.

According to Brice and Dieter, the competition proved to be quite an educational experience on both parts. “I didn’t know much about material science in terms of careers. Now, I view it as being quite a promising future path,” Dieter said.

“This was a very educational experience – learning about a new substance and the many possible future applications,” Brice added.

Both teams’ contribution was of the highest standard and acknowledged by the event organiser. “It is exciting to see our pupils inspired by science and the possibilities of expanding their knowledge in this fascinating field,” said the school’s head of science Mrs P Raubenheimer.
