St Stithians Water Polo girls snatch Clarendon Stayers title

SANDTON – St Stithians College Water Polo first-team girls crowned the 2019 Clarendon Stayers Water Polo champions following a 7-5 upset over hosts Clarendon High School for girls.

St Stithians College water polo girls first team visited the Eastern Cape to participate in the Clarendon Stayers Water Polo tournament hosted by Clarendon High School for Girls.

Making their fifth appearance in this year’s competition, the girls from Sandton displayed great physical strength and skill which saw them beat all their opponents in the tournament. Hosts, Clarendon High, was also the dominant side winning all their games building up to the final where they came up against Saints.

With both St Stithians and Clarendon unbeaten, the final game was exhilarating for the spectators in East London. Clarendon started off like a house on fire taking the lead in the early stages of the game but Saints put up a fierce performance regardless of the scoreline.

St Stithians upped the tempo in the fourth quarter as they stunned Clarendon High taking a 7–5 lead with only a minute remaining in the game. The hosts tried getting back into the match, however, Saints goalkeeper Veronica Keys produced a fine save in the closing stages of the game ensuring the Saints walked away with the 7–5 victory.

St Stithians head of girls water polo, Pierre Le Roux was impressed with how the team fought back. “It was a physical game, I think we struggled in the opening stages of the game and we had to be mobile and adapting. But, I’m happy with how the girls responded and gave it their all to win the game.”

The Clarendon Stayers Water Polo title comes on the eve of the 26th Saints Water Polo Invitational over the half-term weekend at St Stithians College. The competition will begin with the Prep Invitational from 18 to 20 October, with the Seniors Invitational scheduled from 24 to 27 October.
